Sugar Addiction

What To Do After Gorging Out On Candy

It begins innocently enough, but then just a piece, or two or three of  candy turns into the entire bag!  At some point your kids faces are smeared with chocolate and their tongues look like a smudgy rainbow.  You raid your kids candy while they are at school or even hit the after holiday sale for the cheaper candy to stock up.

Let’s face it.  We all love sugar.  It tastes great, but isn’t great for us.

Everyone knows sugar tanks your health, but most don’t know how to quit the cycle.   Here are 5 of my best tips.

5 Things To Do After Gorging Out on Candy and You Want MORE!

  1. Reach for sweet fruit instead – grapes, pears, strawberries, etc.
  2. Eat probiotics – Probiotics are essential for health (read why here) and sugar changes our gut bacteria!  Re-establishing healthy gut bacteria will lesson the sugar cravings.  While there are numerous probiotics in pill form, real food probiotics are best.  Check out Inner-Eco, Wildbrine, Kevita and good ol’ fashion yogurt.
  3. Eat something sour.  Seriously!  Just like opposites attract, our bodies also crave the opposite.  Go grab a pickle and see!
  4. Slow down for a meal.   Take time to make a good meal that will have your taste buds reeling with delight.  🙂
  5. Do something you love.  When you are doing something you love, your brain is filled with happy chemicals and the need for something sweet in the form of food diminishes.

Give these things a try and get your body back on track.  If you are having a hard time breaking the sugar cycle,  you are not alone.  It’s no surprise to learn that sugar is basically as addictive as cocaine. It screws up the brain’s reward pathway, impairs our learning and messes with our moods.

A study at Connecticut College found this:

“Our research supports the theory that high-fat/high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do,” said Joseph Schroeder, director of the college’s behavioral neuroscience program. “It may explain why some people can’t resist these foods despite the fact that they know they are bad for them.”

P.S. Because sugar consumption messes with our gut bacteria, many people notice that after cutting out sugar their acid reflux disappears.  A pretty nice bonus eh?
