What is Health Coaching?

Health Coaching is an inclusive, holistic approach of creating better wellness through awareness.  Health is defined not just by the foods we eat, but also the health of our relationships, spirituality, physical fitness and our day-today schedules and lifestyle.  A health coach can help you reach that place of balance.

 How can I benefit from health coaching?

You can finally reach all of those goals you have been meaning to! We all have goals in life, but sometimes we get so lost in our day-to-day schedule we forget about them and they fall from the top of our priority list.  Goals like-I want to wake up feeling refreshed every morning.  I want to kick my pop habit.  I want less stress overall.  I want to go gluten-free without being overwhelmed.  I want  to help acid reflux naturally. Or… I just know I need/want to become more healthy and don’t know where/how to start.

Health coaching can help keep you accountable to reaching your goals while learning new things about how your body and food relate.

By studying over 100 different dietary theories and having a wealth of experience in the area of nutrition and how food impacts our behavior and how lifestyle impacts our food choices, I can help you to find the connections and create a path to health that is both fun and easy.

What is a session like?

During a session you express what is important to you, what you wish to strengthen and where you want support. Often sessions begin with, “How has your week gone?  What has improved?  What did you find helpful?”  It is a chance for you to talk and have someone really listen and reflect upon what is working and not working.   The sessions also provide a safe space for you to try something new or ask questions.  You might be exploring a new food, calming down your schedule or doing something as simple as drinking a glass of water upon waking.  Health is not rocket science.  The simple things really do add up.

Health coaching can be that platform for you to live a happier, healthier life!

By listening, I am able to hear what is important to you, what is easy for you and what you wish to strengthen.  As a 3rd person, it allows me to ask questions of how 1 thing might relate to something you said earlier.  It is kind of like connecting the dots.

What?  You aren’t going to tell me what to do?

No, this isn’t about being right or wrong.  What is right for one person, might not be right for another.  It is about making one or 2 little changes in your life and noticing the results.  If after asking a question and reflecting if something “clicks” in your head as making sense, then we try it.  Life is about experiences, not rules.

Do you have any areas of specialty?

Yes, I am passionate about kids health and supporting families who are making dietary changes.   My road to health began through one of my sons having severe acid reflux.  Here’s our story for more background.  Along this path, I have helped other mothers find natural solutions to severe acid reflux.  I also have years of experience with food allergies and how that can impact our mood and behavior.

Growing up I had issues with milk and our family went gluten-free nearly 7 years ago when gluten-free was not even on the radar.  I know how overwhelming going gluten-free can be.  Believe me!  Years ago we went on a 3 week vacation I cried most of it, because I couldn’t find options for my son while out on the road.  I also know how hard it can be to change a diet and go against the norm.  Not because the diet is so hard, but the comments from people who don’t understand can be hurtful and not supportive.  I want to create a safe, supportive and understanding place for families who need to change their diet – especially families who are going gluten-free.

Do I need to live near you?

No.  Sessions can be held over the phone.  : )

What is a health history and why is it FREE?

During a health history (or initial consultation) you answer questions relating to your job, family, fitness, eating habits, sleeping schedule, etc.  This provides an opportunity to begin connecting those dots of how everything in life is connected.  It is like a mini-outline of your life and your goals.  Many times during a health history session, it is easy to see where you are ready to make some changes and wish for support.  The session is FREE because, why not?  If my goal is to create more happiness and health in this world, then a health history is the stepping stone to a new path.  : )

Do you have a health coach yourself?

Yes, I do.  As part of the program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I go through the health coaching program myself.  Since I had first hand experience with nutrition, have a background in sociology and teaching  and consciously worked and read for years in the self-help field, I was not expecting to have any huge “ah-ha’ moments.  Boy was I WRONG!  : )  Going through the health coaching myself was incredible!!!!!!!  It truly is amazing to have someone there who is listening without any prior biases because they don’t know you that well.  They are able to see things through a clear lens.  UNBELIEVEABLE!  Mad props to my coach.  : )  p.s. This blog post is one of the things that came from me having a balanced perspective thanks to my health coaching experience.
