Healthy Oreo Twist…

Would you believe me that these are the yummiest, healthiest, “oreos” you could ever taste?

Twice I have made these for people who are not into healthy and twice I have had people asking for seconds.  One person was even standing next to me waiting for the little bits of scraps that resulted from making the round circles!

These insanely good, chewy oreos were adapted from my new favorite blog Chocolate Covered Katie. I LOVE Katie’s blog.  She is young, smart, hip and healthy.  She really hit the nail on the head that you can have your desserts, mainly chocolate, and eat it too!  She is incredibly smart about how to create desserts from healthy ingredients.

That brings me to the most interesting aspect that resulted from me bringing these to a family gathering.  I was surprised, not how much people loved them, but how many people said, “oh I could eat a whole pan of those.  But just 1!  Just 1!”  Did this really mean that they would love to enjoy the cookies but are so programmed that yummy taste isn’t good for them that they would only allow themselves to eat just one.  : (

Are you one of those people that doesn’t allow yourself to enjoy food?

Do you think that if something is delicious that it cannot be good for you?

So many people deprive themselves of really good food that tastes amazing, just to turn around and eat the bland or chemically enhanced junk food.  And by junk food I mean any processed foods….you know the ones with the mile long ingredient list.

Food is our fuel.  Mentally and physically.  We cannot separate our feelings from food, that is how we got into this mess in the first place.  100 years ago people just ate.  They ate what tasted good and food was celebrated.  Food was sometimes scarce so it was enjoyed immensely.  Now thanks to the barrage of advertising we are led to think or feel a different way – guilt has crept in.

The packaged food industry exists for one reason and one reason only PROFIT.  Yes for profit not for your health.  So when people starting gaining weight because they were changing their diet (eating the packaged foods) the packaged food industry didn’t want their profits to disappear.  So what came along?  Fat-free and Reduced Calorie.

The packaged food industry has gotten into our heads so much, that now good old fashioned food like dates and walnuts simply taste too good to be true for many people.  The taste of these healthy Oreos is so alive with flavor and nutrients our tastebuds wake up screaming in delight.   So go ahead and indulge.   There is nothing wrong with eating a pan of these (believe me I have!)

This week I encourage you to indulge in natural foods.  Foods that are whole, yummy and flavorful.  Don’t worry about the fats in the walnuts.  Healthy fats won’t kill you, but lack of nutrients and man made chemicals will.
